The „lump in the throat“ sensation that characterizes globus pharyngis is often caused by inflammation of one or more parts of the throat, such as the larynx or hypopharynx, due to cricopharyngeal spasm, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), or laryngopharyngeal reflux. In some cases the cause is unknown and symptoms may be attributed to a psychogenic cause i.e. a somatoform or anxiety disorder. It has been recognised as a symptom of depression, which responds to anti-depressive treatment.

Das Gefühl eines „Kloßes im Hals“, das den Globus pharyngis charakterisiert, wird häufig durch eine Entzündung eines oder mehrerer Teile des Rachens, wie des Kehlkopfes oder des Hypopharynx, aufgrund eines Krikopharynxspasmus, eines gastroösophagealen Refluxes (GERD) oder eines laryngopharyngealen Refluxes verursacht. In einigen Fällen ist die Ursache unbekannt und die Symptome können auf eine psychogene Ursache zurückgeführt werden, z. B. eine somatoforme Störung oder eine Angststörung. Es ist als Symptom einer Depression anerkannt, die auf eine antidepressive Behandlung anspricht.
